I’m excited to introduce a new blogging series here at BuildMyAccessibleHome, called Property Review! This series will spotlight empty bungalows that are perfect for renovation, with a focus on how they can be turned into accessible spaces.
Renovating Inaccessibility into Accessibility
In each post, I will be reviewing properties from major towns and cities, to highlight the different challenges and opportunities. I will explore how accessibility can be achieved, outlining practical ways to transform these spaces into accessible properties. The properties will be selected at random to ensure each review post covers a different area and style of properties.
Which Properties Will Be Covered?
The majority of the properties covered will be mostly empty. This approach is to respect homeowners’ privacy, as it’s important to avoid infringing on personal belongings or private spaces. These homeowners are simply trying to sell their homes, and I want to be respectful of that. Focusing on empty or auction homes also allows me to highlight properties with real potential.
Building a Way Forward
A key focus of the series will be addressing the specific barriers disabled individuals face when navigating the property market. Many homes simply aren’t designed with accessibility in mind due to a lack of awareness of what accessibility means. While it’s possible to adapt a home using a Disabled Facilities Grant (DfG), it can take years to progress due to the high demand for applications.
I will also be focusing on the various ways to make these homes more accessible, whether that’s through installing ramps, widening doorways, or redesigning interior spaces. My goal is to provide practical insights into how renovation projects can address specific accessibility needs.
