Somebody Stole my Smart Gas Meter

Where Did My Smart Gas Meter Go?

One of the strangest things about owning your own home is discovering its quirks, and sometimes, its missing parts. While I was preparing my new house for accessibility adaptations, I had one of those “Wait… what?” moments.

My smart gas meter was gone! Completely missing!

At first, I assumed the worst; maybe someone had stolen it? After all, gas meter theft isn’t unheard of. But as I dug deeper, the truth turned out to be less dramatic and a lot more common than I expected. This happened during the first month of owning my first-ever home last year, and it was very bizarre…

What do I do if my Smart Gas Meter has been stolen?

Report to Your Energy Supplier Immediately

If you discover your smart gas meter is missing or stolen, contact your energy supplier straight away. They will investigate the situation, deactivate the old meter remotely, and arrange for a replacement to be installed as soon as possible.

Report Smart Meter Tampering

In the UK, you can report smart meter tampering by calling Stay Energy Safe on 0800 023 2777. You can also report energy crimes anonymously online at Report Energy Crime | Stay Energy Safe. Illegal removal or tampering with a smart gas meter is extremely dangerous. Reporting it helps protect you and your neighbours from serious risks.

In Case of Gas Leaks

If you suspect a gas leak because your smart gas meter is missing or damaged, call the Gas Emergency Services immediately on 0800 111 999. Gas leaks can quickly escalate into explosions or fires, so prompt action is critical.

Long Waiting Times

I had to wait around three weeks for a replacement meter, and my bills were estimated during that time. Luckily, my new energy supplier came and fitted one a month later, which wouldn’t have been ideal if I were living there, but since work was still being done, it didn’t cause too many problems.

Secure Your Smart Gas Meter

If you’re worried about your smart gas meter being stolen, consider having the device moved to a secure, less visible location. Keeping it out of sight can reduce the temptation for opportunistic thieves.

You can also add physical protections like lockable enclosures, fencing, or boxes. These not only safeguard the meter but can also enhance the look of your garden or outdoor space. For a more natural approach, planting shrubs or flowers around the meter can act as camouflage while keeping things attractive.

Before making any changes involving your gas meter, always check local regulations and get approval where needed. I’m not responsible if you run into trouble after following this advice!

Can You Prevent Meter Removal?

If you know your property will be vacant for a while, it’s a good idea to contact your energy supplier to discuss your options. They may be able to pause or adjust your account instead of removing the meter. In some cases, meters can remain connected but switched off, depending on the supplier’s policies.

Always check your meter status before moving in to avoid surprises, like going weeks without gas when you least expect it. Following sensible security advice (as covered on dynamicdouble.co.uk) and being a little risk-averse can help give you peace of mind and ensure everything is in order before you move on.

Actually… a plant would be nice too (has to be good for Cats)!

Every little bit helps raise awareness of key accessibility issues and speeds up the adaptations on my property. Thanks a million for your support!
