Fifth Update
My fifth edition of the house hunting has now arrived! This series aims to take you through my journey as a disabled first-time buyer. I am to talk about the many different houses I’ve viewed so far and give my personal view on how truly accessible the housing market is. Did I strike the perfect accessible home this time around? Read on to find out!
Online
When I came across this house online, it looks very modern and looked to have been renovated with many attractive features, that anyone would need in a house. It has a spacious garden with a large model sheep at the bottom – we thought it was an actual sheep, to begin with… Overall, the house itself looked like a great house for any family, wanting a house in a fairly popular area.
The Viewing
Inside the house, there were very spacious rooms as shown via the online viewing. The most surprising room was the bathroom, which was the biggest bathroom anyone had ever seen, complete with a bath which even a hoist could fit under! As for the other rooms, they were pretty decent in size, offering plenty of room for a powerchair user like me to get around.
Despite it being suitable inside, the land itself was the main reason this house wasn’t suitable for me. It had a very steep drive and garden, which would make it almost impossible to level and redo to make it more accessible. The way into the property also added some additional issues due to how high the steps into the house were.
It’s Not The Lands Fault!
As heartbreaking it is that this house almost ticked all my accessibility boxes, it needed to have been built on more accessible land for it to have been right for me. However, nothing is against building houses on different gradients and levels as we do need more houses to be built due to shortages. For now, it’s time I get back on the house hunt for the perfect accessible home!
