Campaigning For More Accessible Homes
Do you want to get involved in helping more accessible houses built in the UK? Well, fear not as I’ve written a guide on how you can support BuildMyAccessibleHome. The guide will cover a few ways in which you can engage with this website, including suggested ideas and discussion.
All points here are my ideas and may have already been tried and failed by others. If you have tried any of these and have succeeded/failed, please let us know in the comments!
We need more accessible homes to be built to ensure young disabled people can get onto the property ladder. It shouldn’t have to be more difficult to find a home suitable for our accessibility needs nor should we have to make do with inaccessible home features.
How to Get Involved
Be Social
We’re quite social beings so why not use the power of conversation to make a difference. If you’re struggling to find a home due to your disability, let others know about your frustrations. WordPress, blogger, etc., are some good examples of platforms similar to this website.
Much like this blog, I’ve created this to express the issues I’ve faced regarding finding an accessible home and the lack of accessible bungalows/housing being built. It’s also my journey of finding an accessible house on the private housing market, in hopes to prove how difficult it is to find a suitable home as a disabled person.
Social Media
In regards to being social, you could use social media to post about your frustrations. Did I mention it’s free? When posting on social media, make sure you use the #BuildMyAccessibleHome hashtag to support the campaign. Below is an example of a tweet including the hashtags mentioned above.

Through social media, we can share our experiences, frustrations and issues on finding suitable accessible housing on the private housing market. By sharing our stories and experiences, were spreading the word on this very important issue. The more we talk on social media, the easier it could potentially become to find an accessible home. I think this depends on how much exposure these posts provide.

Talk to MPs and Developers
Speaking to your local MPs and local developers potentially could help too. While they might already have the properties planned to be built, putting forward your issues on lack of accessible housing might help the issue get recognised.
Although, it’s important to note that this depends on your MP as accessible housing may not be considered a top priority for them at the moment. That said, it doesn’t hurt to let others know our concerns as there is always a slim chance it could be dealt with the issue sooner.
Let’s Get Communicating!
The last three points mentioned, focused on having conversations and communicating with others socially. We need to make as many people aware of the issues we face, especially when it comes to the lack of physical disability-accessible housing on the private housing market.
As we discussed, there are plenty of ways we can communicate these issues and highlight our experiences. The more we communicate and the more we’re willing to work with others i.e. developers, councils and MPs – the easier it will (hopefully) become.
