Eleventh Edition!
Our eleventh edition of the property hunt update is here! This edition will be covering a house I saw recently just down the road from me. I felt this house would be suitable due to the attractive price point and the fact there was an accessible ramp towards the garden.
The House
Today’s house was a worn semi-detached house, the outside wall had signs of paint crumbling and wood window panels that looked to be rotting. To the right side of the building, there was a gate which took you to the entrance of the house which had very slippery decking!
The Viewing
Unfortunately, this house encapsulated what people call “accessible houses” because it had a ramp but this was far from the truth. On visiting the home, I quickly saw that the house was small, had a tiny wet room and couldn’t even get my powerchair out the door.
The home itself wasn’t fit for anyone with severe disabilities such as myself and the fact an older disabled person was living there made me question how suitable the housing market is.
The Issue With Making Houses Accessible
The problem with houses is that they require lifts and with every house, I’ve visited they are often small and unsuitable for my accessible needs. As a disabled first-time buyer, I don’t have the disposable income to invest in all accessible features at once.
When considering the potential redecorating, bathroom adjustments and widening of doorways, something like a platform lift can quickly become expensive or impossible to factor in, especially with mortgage repayments bills and other daily expenses to pay.

While it was disappointing on this attempt, I shall be continuing my journey on getting onto the housing market.
