Twelfth Housing Update
When you view a property you get to see the style and quirks of the home. Recently, we had a house that had an extensive collection of teapots of varying styles and sizes. Would this house be my cup of tea or would it be a forgotten brew? Let’s see how the latest property update went for me on my journey to get an accessible home!
The Viewing
Front Garden
At the front of the garden, there was a well-presented front garden, with plenty of potted plants and bushes. To the right of the property was a good-sized driveway big enough for a car or two and to the left was a small path that led down a small walkway towards the front door. Unfortunately, this area was quite tight and too small for a powerchair user, presenting the need for an alternative entrance to be created.
Interior
Inside the property, there were teapots everywhere, staring at you from every corner of the room. Besides, the teapots were outdated and old-fashioned aesthetic, showing the home needed some TLC to be brought back to life. The majority of rooms were spacious enough for a powerchair user but the entrance wasn’t – the inside of the property needed adapting to become accessible since the doorway had steps and was too small.
Back Garden
As for the garden, there was plenty of patio and concrete to be seen, with plenty of opportunities to be made into a beautiful garden, however, much like the entrance, there were plenty of steps down into the garden meaning considerable work was needed to access it.
Too Much Work Needed…
Unfortunately, this home was just outside my price range and needed a fair bit of work to become fully accessible for me. It wasn’t the right bungalow for me but the search must go on for the perfect accessible home!
People often think bungalows are automatically suitable for disabled people, although, from viewing many bungalows, I’ve found most are far from ideal. Many bungalows have inaccessible features i.e. steps, tight hallways and small rooms, unsuitable for powerchair users.

Is there a reason you don’t look at flats? You’re much more likely to find something adaptable and they’re usually in better locations. I think flats are perfect for first time buyers and then you can move to a house or bungalow further down the line.
I have considered looking at flats but haven’t found one that is suitable yet. I’m not really in a rush to move out so happy to continue looking at bungalows until I find the right one. There’s also the added costs of leasehold and maintenance fees which I’d rather not have to commit to.
