Fatigue Sets In
From the last couple of updates, I’ve been unsuccessful in finding my perfect home. The property was just too small and didn’t accommodate even my basic accessibility needs. Often properties across the United Kingdom lack accessible design that enables disabled people to live in them independently.
Very recently, I’ve felt the disappointment and frustration of being unable to find an accessible property. For anyone looking for a home, it can be difficult to find one that suits your need which, I would describe as “property hunting fatigue” – when you just can’t find that ideal accessible property. The picture of the yawning Cat for this was selected because it captures how tired I am of inaccessible housing options on the market!
Not So Easy
I know I’ve only booked to see a few properties so far and it’s just the starting point, but these properties were a few out of the others which seemed easy to adapt from my perspective. The other properties I viewed online weren’t accessible for me either due to a range of inaccessible features, including a lack of step-free access and no space in the bathroom for my powerchair to turn in. You would imagine that installing a ramp would make a property automatically accessible but it is hardly the case most of the time.
Lack of Accessible Viewings
It’s often easier to find a property suitable for your accessibility needs if all the information is readily available. As I’ve already explained in a previous post, there are many properties disabled people can’t even get into to view, let alone adapt to their needs.
We need a better property viewing process in place to make the viewing process more accessible for everyone and in many cases, all we need are more accessible properties to be built across the UK.
Lack of Accessible Properties
I do find that the lack of accessible properties has impacted me in some way. These factors aren’t really in my control due to the lack of understanding of what disabled people’s property needs are. The constant struggle to find a property I can even consider buying has been difficult.
I have lost quite a bit of property hunting motivation due to this and just haven’t felt as excited about finding the perfect property anymore. At the moment, there aren’t any properties I have gotten excited about due to the pure fact it wasn’t accessible, to begin with.
Although, on the flip side, the main reason this website was created was to discuss these frustrations. I do find a bit of comfort in writing about my experiences, thoughts and feelings here. It isn’t like I’m alone in this either because many other disabled people feel the same, it’s the main reason why the government have pledged to sort out the accessible property issues.
