A Year On
It was a cold winter day when I decided it was time to look for a home. Amidst a global pandemic, I opened up Rightmove and began searching for potential properties. After pages and pages of searching, I found the majority of homes lacked accessible features. One whole year ago was when I started my journey to find a home on the property market and it’s been a hell of a ride since.
When BuildMyAccessibleHome Began!
Even a year later, I’ve been experiencing the same problems over and over again. What felt like something so easy to find became a long struggle which I felt had to be recorded and documented on my blog, ‘buildmyaccessiblehome.com’. In July of 2021, I started this blog in an attempt to capture my journey, which aimed to highlight the current struggles for disabled people in getting onto the property market.
Post after post!
Many posts were written about various properties I’ve visited and the problems faced as a disabled person trying to get on the property market. More recently, I’ve also been exploring how to make properties more wheelchair accessible and campaigning for more accessible housing across the UK. It’s an unfortunate story of how the developed world still lets down physically disabled people when it comes to infrastructure and property design.
Keep On Building
My aim during 2022 is of course to try to get myself an accessible property, plus continue to document my progress and experiences. Through this blog, I would like to create awareness of what disabled people face when it comes to property searching, whilst pushing the conversation on the need for more accessible properties.
Do I think progress has been made you solving the issue? I’m not entirely sure but there is more that needs to be done to enable easier access to the property market as a disabled person. Hopefully, it’s a matter of time before we’re able to easily access suitable housing for our accessibility needs.
